Here is a brief description of the healthcare system in the country:

·      Cambodia has a mixed public-private healthcare system. The Ministry of Health oversees public healthcare provision.

·      Primary care is delivered via health centers, clinics and mobile services. These are the main entry point for most Cambodians.

·      Referrals from primary facilities are required to access public general hospitals at the operational district and provincial levels.

·      Tertiary and more specialized services are provided by teaching hospitals in Phnom Penh and a few regional centers.

·      Private practices, hospitals, pharmacies operate alongside public options but are generally more expensive.

·      Key health issues include communicable diseases, maternal and child health problems, road injuries and non-communicable diseases.

·      Geographic access disparities exist as nearly half the population lives beyond 5km of the nearest public health center.

·      Out-of-pocket costs still account for over 60% of total healthcare spending despite policy goals to expand insurance.

Here are some key health considerations for expatriates living in the country:

·      Insurance - Expatriates are not covered under public healthcare. Comprehensive private health and medical evacuation insurance is essential.

·      Registration - Foreign residents need to obtain proper visa documentation which may be required for access to private clinics/hospitals.

·      Language - English is widely used in cities but some comprehension of Khmer phrases aids rural care access if translated.

·      Medications - Bring a supply of any long-term prescriptions as availability varies outside cities. Consider alternatives if interrupted.

·      Vaccinations - Ensure routine schedules are complete. Consider others like Japanese encephalitis or rabies depending on location in Cambodia.

·      Medical capacity - Advanced care is limited outside major centers. Evaluate proximity to international-standard hospitals for emergencies.

·      Food/water safety - Bottled water is recommended. Cooked food and thorough washing reduces illness risks in this setting.

·      Road accidents - Driving risks are higher due to traffic violations and poor infrastructure. Take precautions as a passenger or driver.
